Week 6: Speaker Session 3 – Conflict and Health: Citizens without a state

Updated: Apr 11, 2022

This week's speaker session focused on the health needs of displaced populations, specifically in relation to the thousands of Rohingya Muslims seeking refuge in Bangladesh. Participants were provided with an understanding of displacement worldwide and challenged to think of the positionally and implications for their Member States. Moreover, students were encouraged to consider the health needs of vulnerable groups such as displaced individuals, groups, and populations.

We were delighted to be joined by two keynote speakers, Dr Khaleda and Dr Sanzida. Dr Khaleda is a Consultant and Medical Director at the European Wellness Villa Medica Bangladesh, and Dr Sanzida is an ICU Medical Doctor working in Sadar Hospital, based in Cox's Bazar which is the world's largest refugee camp. They provided harrowing testimonies of the on-ground situation in Bangladesh, highlighting the compounding effects that the ongoing COVID-19 (Sars-COV-2) pandemic has had on humanitarian responses.
